Reflection Essay

Reflection Essay

After watching the videos in class and learning about major food producers and how there food is made it has definitely changed my opinion and increased my knowledge on food production.
The goals of these major food companies are to simply make as much money as the can the quickest. They cut corners on quality and safety of their products in order to save money. They have figured out ways to mass produce things that should never be mass produced.
Companies such as Tyson have almost a monopoly over the meat industry and have slaughterhouses that run as factories. Animal are forced to live in horrible conditions and are forced to eat things they don’t normally eat such as corn. Feeding the cows corn is dangerous because it is not part of their diet of mainly grass causing salmonella outbreaks in the cow’s stomachs. They stand ankle deep in manure and have no room to roam or graze. They are brought in to the factory and are put on a conveyer belt where they are slaughtered and packaged and shipped out to supermarkets all over the world.
This way of business is harmful because the cows are living in ways that they should never have to live in and the quality of their food is tainted. Living in such close quarters as each other means that if there is an outbreak of disease all the cows get it in a short period of time. Companies usually don’t recall their product until it is too late causing many people to suffer from major illnesses and sometimes death.
Farms that can sustain their food are the farms that should have their food purchased instead of major food producers with unsustainable food. There still are small local farms that feed their animals with grass and allow them to roam and their plans are genetically modified. The only problem with buying food like this is it is more expansive and many families simply can’t afford buying a head of lettuce over a meal at McDonalds. We need to develop a way so that consumers can buy these healthier sustainable food options than a cheap fast food burger. Many families are forced to live off these fast food restaurants because it is all they can afford causing them to become obese. This is one of the reasons why the obesity rate is so high up. We need to warn the people that if we keep buying fast food over real food than the real food farms will go out of business and all we will be able to buy is unhealthy, cheep, mass produced food.
After researching all this in class I am going to try and change my diet. When I go to the grocery store I will ask my mom if we can buy some of the local organic foods instead of the ShopRite brand food that comes mainly from South Africa. Even though this food is more expensive it is healthier and more nutritious than the other food.  I feel that if I change my diet and so do other people than we can make these major food producers make more healthy and local food choices.
I am going to buy organic food also. Organic food is healthy and usually local. Organic food is sustainable but also very expensive. Organic food is sold at local grocery stores and I encourage people to buy it over non organic food as much as possible. Make sure that when you buy organic food it is actually organic and has the USDA sticker on it. Some foods will say organic but may not be completely organic.
Things that surprised me were how many people are forced to buy mass produced food. It is advertised more and is extremely cheaper and in this bad economy many people can’t spend the extra money on healthy food because they simply don’t have it.
Another thing that surprised me is the amount of safety concerns food manufacturers simply don’t pay attention to. Many people have died from consuming these foods that are not safe to eat. When food is produced to quickly and cheaply if one thing becomes contaminated soon many other things become contaminated to. Instead of trying to fix the problem food companies try to cover it up because if they were to have a recall they would lose a lot of money. There should be more rules and regulations for these food producers in order to prevent things like this from happening.
Another thing that surprised me is how it is cheaper to grow and distribute food in places such as South Africa even though they are so far away. The fact that they can pay their employees a lot less money and not feed and treat their animals properly can outweigh the cost of gas and transportation fees. It cost $18,900 dollars of gas just to provide all my food for a week. If all my food was local the amount of gas it would take to bring me all my food would be a lot less. Even though you may try to by local food as much as possible you will eventually buy something grown out of the USA. If we could get food manufactures to move their factory’s to America we would have a lot more jobs and it would cost less money to buy because it would cost a lot less gas. Companies to need to cut their profits and pay their employees more money so they have a safer product so the chance of having a recall would greatly decrease.
One of the last things that surprised me is how local farmers are being forced to buy from major companies also. In the video we watched corn farmers were forced to buy seeds from a company and if they decided to keep their own seeds their neighbors would rat them out.
America needs to reshape its food industry if we are going to have sustainable healthy food available to the public in year to come.

My food travels roughly 70,000 miles to get to my house. A truck averages about 10 miles to the gallon which mens it takes about 7,000 gallons of gas. The averages gas price is $2.70 cents a gallon so the gas would cost $18,900 dollars.
